Frequently asked questions

What are Minecraft color codes?

Minecraft color codes are two-character sequences starting with the section sign (§) followed by a letter or number, used to color and format text in chat, signs, books, MOTDs and command output. For example §c produces red text and §l makes text bold.

How do I use color codes in my server MOTD?

Open your server.properties file and add color codes directly into the motd field using the section sign, for example motd=§bGGNodes §8| §aPremium Hosting. Some panels require the codes to be escaped or use an ampersand (&) instead of §, depending on the plugin.

How do Minecraft RGB gradients work?

Since Minecraft Java Edition 1.16, text components support full hex RGB colors through JSON text formatting. The gradient generator blends between two or more hex colors across each character to create a smooth transition.

Can I use color codes on Bedrock Edition?

Bedrock Edition supports the standard 16 section-sign color codes and most formatting codes, but full RGB hex gradients are more limited outside of resource packs and certain add-ons compared to Java Edition.

Why isn't my color code working in game?

The most common cause is typing an ampersand (&) instead of the true section sign (§), or placing a formatting code like bold before a color code, which resets the formatting. Copy the generated code directly instead of retyping it by hand.

What is a .mcpack file, and how do I get a .zip from it?

A .mcpack (or .mcaddon) is a Bedrock Edition resource/behavior pack that is internally just a zip archive with a renamed extension. Use the MCPack → Zip converter to relabel it back to .zip without re-compressing anything, so tools that expect a .zip can open it.
